The Andamans

The Andamans is an archipelago of over 570 tropical islands, of which only 36 are inhabited. 

Andaman and Nicobar has approximately 86 percent of forest area of its total land. The forests constitute an integral wing of the natural resource of Andaman and Nicobar and it houses 96 Sanctuaries and 9 National Parks

 

Following are the major tourist attractions in Andaman and Nicobar islands.

 

Cellular Jail

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kālā Pānī (Black Water), was a colonial prison. The prison was used by the British especially to exile political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Many notable dissidents such as Batukeshwar Dutt and Veer Savarkar, among others, were imprisoned here during the struggle for India's independence. Today, the complex serves as a national memorial monument. One of the highlights of the Jail is the light and sound show that happen every evening.

Havelock Island

Havelock Island, is the largest of the islands and home to the world famous Radhangar beach (listed as the 7th best beach in the world by TIME magazine) and Vijay nagar beaches. It is the most popular island among tourists with its pristine sand beaches and sports activities such as scuba diving, underwater seawalk, snorkelling etc.

Little Andamans/Hutbay

Little Andaman a 6 hour noat ride from Port Blair on one of fast boats operated by the DSS. It is one of the few islands in the Andaman that is open to tourism. Its one of the largest, yet it's remote location makes it the least visited. Those that do make the journey will stumble across pristine beaches, beautiful waves, waterfalls in a forest setting, spectacular coves, good food, rustic accommodation, palm oil plantations and friendly locals.

Ross & Smith Islands

One needs to reach the northern town of Diglipur to access these islands. This does take an entire day by road through the rich environs of the Great Andaman Trunk road. What makes these islands truly beautiful and sets them apart from the rest of the islands is that these two islands are joined by a natural, sand bar. While walking on the sand bar one can move from one island to the other. 

Long Island

The pristine beauty of Long Island and adjacent islands in the form of lush green tropical forests, untouched virgin beaches coupled with unique Marine ecosystem attracts the tourists from different parts of India and abroad
